Air Sampling vs Surface Sampling: Which Test Do You Need?

Air sampling measures what you breathe

A calibrated pump draws a known air volume across a spore trap cassette. The laboratory counts and identifies spore types, and results are compared against an outdoor control sample taken the same day. That comparison is what makes an indoor count meaningful.

Surface sampling proves what a stain is

Swabs and tape lifts collect material directly from a suspect surface. The laboratory confirms whether the discoloration is mold growth, what genera are present, and whether growth is active rather than settled dust.

When both are used together

A typical inspection uses air samples to characterize the breathing zone and surface samples to confirm specific findings. Post-remediation verification almost always uses both so clearance is defensible.
